It’s not everyday you get to scuba dive with such giant gentle creatures! Dugongs are closely related to manatees and are native to the Indo-Pacific. They generally shy away from people because they are still hunted in some regions. Sandy is a well known dugong in this area and he peacefully went about grazing while we took pictures. We stayed with him for about 30 minutes before he gracefully swam away. One of the most common questions I get asked: How do you find a sailboat looking for crew? ⛵️ The best place to look is Facebook groups! For example “Sailboat Hitchhikers and Crew Connections” or “Find Crew Be Crew”. You can also look for region-specific opportunities in local Facebook groups for cruisers (people traveling the world on their recreational sailboats) like “Sailing & Cruising Fiji” or “Sailing Mexico”.There are also crew finding platforms such as Crew Bay or Find a Crew and some new apps coming out like Sea People. Or you can do it the old fashioned way and make a flyer and post it up in marinas or ask around the dock. But I honestly find the most amount of cruisers and opportunities are posted on Facebook groups. Keep in mind this is for recreational opportunities to join a boat as a crew member, not necessarily paid and some may ask for contribution.‼️Obviously, be cautious with anyone you meet over the internet! Especially if you are a woman 💁‍♀️And NO, sailing experience is often not required! Most captains are just looking for nice people, eager to learn and help out, and who hopefully don’t get seasick. Obviously any skills you can bring to the table (cooking, cleaning, maintenance) are a plus but many captains prefer inexperienced crew so they can teach them exactly how they want their boat handled. Experienced crew is generally preferred for longer ocean crossings. Hope this helps!
